One of the things I am trying to encourage you to consider is how your personal concerns and ideas can be made into public issues through what we, in class, call Public Discourse. How does what you think, do, or say carry over to the public? I have asked that each student join a group or organization of their interest. Now I ask each of you to consider how you can possibly cause a change in society by being a part of that group.

As we continue to think about how public literacy, public discourse and argument fit into the idea of Service Learning, I want you to also step back and look at how YOU fit into all of these ideas.

I hope that you all find ways to make changes to society through (what we now know as) the Rhetorical Situations that surround us each day. How can Public Discourse influence the Rhetorical Situation?

What We're Doing

This Weblog is part of a beginning Service Learning class at the University of Southern Indiana. Throughout the semester, the students in the service learning classes will be exploring ways to make their concerns and observations into public issues. We'll be updating individual blogs every week so please check back regularly.

We' re learning as we go. And we're learning as we begin to take up causes that are meaningful to us and find ways to become advocates of those causes.
